This R&D was done using Notch motion graphics software, it is incorporating various workflows and tools that this software offers.
Down the rabbit hole with Field - Temperatures and Densities!
I have spent some time lately exploring different options and parameters while setting up fire simulations, somewhere along the way I ended up lighting up a monkey.

Here is my usual staring point with comments and screenshot of the main parameters ^^

Key nodes:

Field Root  - essential setting here is changing Density Field mode from Colours to Densities and Temperatures.
I tend to enable Upres density field, as it adds quality for a fraction of a price that you would pay if you were to increase Width, Height and Depth in Field Root.
Locking Update Rate is a good thing to do with any simulation so I always do that.
Rest of the settings - Dampening, Temperature, Draft is a personal choice and you will see how one and the other affects your simulation, you will end up finding your personal favorites in no time.

Fluid affector - This one is a must in the node graph, it drives the majority of the look and feel of the setting, I tend to bump down the simulations speed and bump up Vorticity confinement ( increases the number of small swirls in the fluid system).

Field shadows - Here you can set any and all colour related parameters, so no specific settings that I can offer, very much a personal choice.

Disclaimer - No monkeys were harmed in making of this simulation.
Please use Notch to set things on fire in real time without consequences. Create irresponsibly.
